Patagonia and The Province of Chubut The province of Chubut is in the southern part of Argentina between the provinces of Rio Negro and Santa Cruz. The Andes Mountains are what separates these provinces from Chile and the Atlantic Ocean. The Capital of Chubut is Rawson. The total population of the province is 413,237. The national territory of Chubut was established in 1884, and in 1955 Chubut was considered a province. An indigenous tribe, Tehuelches, inhabited the Patagonia province before the Spaniard missionaries arrived. After the Spaniard’s fort was destroyed by the natives, the Welch settled and established the area. Chubut produces 13 percent of the Argentina’s oil, making oil the main economy activity. Also, 21 percent of the Argentina’s fishing is done in this province. Tourism is a growing industry in this province with its natural beauty, water districts, and wildlife reservoirs.
